Project of the Week: CCTV Headquarters, Beijing, China, OMA

Plenty of Chinese architecture has found its way onto WorldBuild365 over the past few months, beguiling and enchanting with the sheer levels of imagination, artistry, and engineering prowess on show.

In recent years, alongside its supersonic economic growth, China has become a playground for the world’s architects. China’s global rise to US-challenging powerhouse means its bursting with confidence and cash - so its businesses, institutions, and public facilities are crying out for structures worthy of its huge monetary wealth and stronger geopolitical position.

CCTV Building

China Central Television’s  (CCTV) Beijing Headquarters is amongst the group of mega projects that fired the starting gun on China’s architectural overhaul. First conceived back in 2002, opened in time for the 2008 Beijing Olympics, and finally entering operation four years later, Beijing’s top architectural draw had a long gestation. The end results, however, speak for themselves.

CCTV Building

CCTV Headquarters is one of the more unique commercial designs out there. It is comprised of two towers that gently lean in towards each other, before merging together, via a 75-metre perpendicular cantilever, into a cohesive whole. Both connected towers rise from a common platform.

In total the building holds around 473,000m2 of floor space.
