On the market: 5 of the best markets from around the world
Markets. More than just simple places to buy and sell, they have long been community meeting places, drawing society together in a central focal point.
The humble market has been chopped and changed, expanded and shrank, and inexorably altered during its millennia-spanning life. In the modern era, these shopping spaces have also become places where architects can flex their creative muscles – just look at Rotterdam’s Markthal for instance.
While Markthal might be the granddaddy of modern markets, it is not the only present day example demanding your attention. WorldBuild365 has scoured the globe to bring you five present day examples of the classic market layout – some big, some small; all stunning.
Manlleu Market – Comas-Pont arquitectes – Barcelona, Spain
Manlleu Market, set in the Barcelona district of the same name, is a thoroughly contemporary take on a classic shopping space. It holds all the functionalities of the traditional marketplace – a wide-open trading floor, well-presented stalls, and a dedicated logistics space – wrapped up in a sleek, zinc-skinned package.
One big issue for Comas-Pont arquitectes, Manlleu’s designers, was light. As this is a covered market hall, making sure visibility remained high was a top priority. To achieve this, the architects employed a system of wooden slats, internally on and on outer facades, that gently filters light into the central selling area.
Mannlley eco-friendly too. It features passive systems to control heating (geothermal energy, heat recovery machines), a roof tank collects rain water, and all building materials are recyclable should the building ever be dismantled.
Manlleu Market is part of a greater regeneration project taking place throughout Barcelona. When it opened back in 2011, Manlleu became new community hub – a reminder of the power of architecture to bring people together.
