Some of the materials used in earthquake resistant buildings are listed and described in detail on this page. They...

Earthquake Resistant Materials

Earthquake resistant building materials include...

Aluminum roofing is lightweight, relatively flexible, and better suited to conditions during earthquakes than heavier roofing materials. The aluminum is structurally sound, but in the event that it is severely damaged its weight won't cause a home to become even more destabilized.

Flexible hosing should be used to replace solid pipework throughout a property. This is because the non-flexible pipes will bend and crack under the stress, and this in turn will result in ruptures and leaks. Flexible pipes will be able to move, bend, and shift without breaking – this makes them earthquake safe building materials.

Reinforced concrete is normal concrete that has been strengthened with steel reinforcement bars or fibers. Earthquake resistant materials such as this type of concrete will stand much more chance of keeping a property standing during a seismic event.

Foundation bolts and plates improve the connection between the frame of a building and its concrete foundation. If inserted in the right locations and properly fixed, these bolts and plates will greatly increase the robustness of a property – thus making them earthquake proof materials.

Foundation hold-down brackets are specially designed and constructed to anchor shear walls, and resist any lifting or rolling effects which may be experienced during an earthquake.

Seismic Strengthening

Other earthquake proof building materials cover...

Seismic isolation bearings consist of rubber and steel bearing and are mounted to a building using a special steel flange. These units achieve excellent levels of seismic strengthening by acting as a kind of spring during an earthquake – the rubber is soft laterally, but stiff vertically. This enables them to carry significant axial load.

Earthquake absorbing damper bearings are similar to seismic isolation bearings but have greater rubber content which enables them to reach a damping ratio of up to 18%. Therefore, this particular type of bearing is also suitable for use on highways and municipal bridges.

Energy dissipation devices act like hydraulic shock absorbers in cars and they’ll absorb much of the sudden jerks that are likely to occur as a consequence of a seismic event. There are many different types of these devices, and they include viscous dampers, friction dampers, yielding dampers, viscoelastic dampers, and more.

Other popular searches include dampers for seismic resistant structures, earthquake dampers, earthquake damper devices, dampers with high earthquake resistant performance, and seismic dampers.
