Building Materials, Structures and Elements

Choosing building materials for any project involves thorough consideration of initial and ongoing costs, material performance, availability and environmental impact. Recycling once finished is also an important thing to think about.

Building Materials Suitable for Any Architectural Project

Building materials are to be used sustainably which requires the utilization of recycled materials, those that are readily available or taken from renewable sources.

Aluminum buildings are primarily oriented towards detailing and decorative structures. The material is one of the most sustainable and energy-efficient available today. Compared with iron and steel, It has a greater ability to reflect infrared sun rays.

Aluminum, when used as a roof coating, drastically improves the overall energy efficiency of buildings. Roofs can reflect about 95% of incoming solar energy. Aluminum buildings are fast to construct and durable. They require minimal maintenance, no painting and no cure time.

There are 3 main types of aggregates. Natural aggregates are sourced from natural sea-dredged materials. Recycled aggregates, on the other hand, are made of construction or demolition residues through reprocessing.  Manufactured aggregates are the third type, which are derived from industrial processes.

The Wide Variety of Building Structures

Building structures are in general an enclosed structure created to be occupied by humans. Any building involves more than the structure itself, but roofing, interior walls and ceilings, heating and ventilations systems and more. Some structural systems can be designed for seismic resistance and to perform better in natural disasters.

Steel structures are most common in industrial areas, but today they are gaining more popularity and are widely used for storage purposes - even as an office or work environments. Steel buildings are economical and versatile. They offer unlimited aesthetic, design and engineering flexibility. Building with steel can substantially decrease the construction price. Prefabricated steel structures involve no onsite wastage of material – ideal for any project.

Prefabricated structures are more affordable than conventional buildings. They allow buyers to have an energy-efficient solution with custom design without spending a fortune. Prefabricated buildings are pre-constructed and then shipped in pieces directly to the building site – but still meet the same building requirements as traditional constructions. They are faster and easier to build The overall time required for the construction of an average modular prefabricated house, for example, is 3 to 4 months.

Passive house standard helps home owners to reduce their energy consumption by about 90%, thanks to improved insulation, solar heat panels, heat recovery etc. Any building structure can be considered Passive house: offices, schools, stores or houses. These kind of buildings are among the most affordable and environmentally-friendly options available.

Log houses are now seeing greater demand globally as more and more people are considering living in sustainable eco alternatives to traditional housing. A log home has a cosy and warm appearance with attractive wood walls. Log houses today follow custom design floor plans. They are built with construction-ready log materials delivered directly to the building site. As a basic standard for modern buildings, log homes also have HVAC, plumbing and electrical systems built in.

Most Popular Building Elements

At the beginning of each construction project, the architect is expected to specify the building elements that are most suitable for the final design. These building elements fall in some major categories such as exterior walls, roof, walls blocks and so on.

Bricks and blocks have many advantages for construction. They represent the ultimate fire protection as they have a very high heat resistance. Bricks and blocks also assure proper acoustic insulation. Most energy efficient homes rely on bricks to reduce heating and cooling costs – keeping the property warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer. Bricks and blocks are mostly maintenance free too. No painting or sealing is required.

Concrete wall blocks are extremely durable, thanks to the steel reinforcement held inside. They can even withstand tornados and hurricanes. Blocks are not as damage prone as woods, and they require less maintenance. Constructing block homes is much cheaper than building a log house or a wood frame home too. Blocks are not subject to fire, water damage and pests infestation.

The main disadvantage of using both bricks and blocks is repair costs. In the unlikely event of extensive damage, the entire wall section should be removed, which can prove to be very costly.
